Other Records

While information in public records may be scarce, you may find a wealth of sources in private records like family manuscripts, unpublished and published genealogical data, and newspapers.

Consult the South Caroliniana Library and the South Carolina Historical Society, for this type of material. For a guide to the Society's holdings see David Moltke-Hansen and Sallie Doscher, South Carolina Historical Society: Manuscript Guide (Charleston, S.C.: South Carolina Historical Society, 1979) or visit their on-line catalogue.

Newspapers often mention deaths and marriages. Some South Carolina newspaper marriage and death notices have been abstracted and published; please consult the card catalog in the Reference Room at the SC Archives. For a bibliography of newspapers please consult John Hammond Moore, comp. and ed., South Carolina Newspapers, (Columbia, S.C.: University of South Carolina Press, 1988).

Other information is available in published sources like cemetery surveys and abstracts of state or county records.

Please consult the card catalog in the Reference Room, or other libraries or depositories, for these and other sources.
